Indian Gharial & Malayan Gharial

Drawing of a Malayan gharial, or tomistoma

The Malayan gharial, or Tomistoma, is one of the most enigmatic of all crocodilians.Virtually nothing is known about its status or ecology. The Indian gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) is one of the two largest species of crocodilians, and is found in a few isolated rivers on the Indian subcontinent. It has largely disappeared due to hunting and habitat loss.Over the last 25 years, the Indian and Nepalese governments have carried out extensive reintroduction efforts. These efforts are in urgent need of reevaluation, as recent information suggests that populations have declined rapidly during the last five years. Initiating conservation efforts with these two species are a high priority for WCS.
