Hkakabo Razi National Park - Myanmar
On November 12, 1998 the Myanmar government designated a 1,500 square mile area as Hkakabo Razi National Park, based on recommendations from a WCS Science and Exploration survey team. WCS staff scientists are continuing work with the Myanmar Forest Department to train new park staff, write a five-year management plan for the park, and develop a community outreach program for people living within the park. Human welfare in the area has improved since WCS began work there, providing local people with employment and essential goods such as salt, medicine, clothing, and tea. As a result of WCS involvement in the area, there has been a noticable decrease in the amount of illegal hunting. WCS is currently working with the Myanmar government to propose Hkakabo Razi as a World Heritage Site.
